Things you need to know:
1) Jump Rope for Heart this Friday (5/8). Collection envelopes due Friday as well.
2) International Spring Fest this Saturday (5/9). You won't want to miss it!
3) +/- Flashcard Showdown with the Second Grade on 5/15. Keep practicing those facts!
4) Play rehearsals on 5/20 and 5/21

Program of Inquiry-Careers and Economics
Central Idea: Members of a workforce make choices that affect the economy of region.
Inquiry Into: 1) Career Choices (past, present, and future)
2) Economic Systems in a Community
3) Interdependence of Business and the People in the Community
Teacher Questions: 1) What causes careers in a community to change over time?
2) What can influence a community's economy?
3) What makes a community function and survive?
This week students are learning about:
Students are finishing up their summative projects.
On Tuesday, students will take their formative assessment and will write their unit reflections.
On Wednesday, we will start our final unit of inquiry-Physical Earth. (more details on this unit next week)
*We will continue Mini-Economy for the rest of the year. The kids are really enjoying it!

Field Studies-TBA
Spelling- Silent K and W
Vocabulary-Wordly Wise Lessons. Students will have 1 1/2 hours of class time during the week to work on their Wordly Wise Lesson. Students will take their test on Thursday this week due to schedule changes.
Math- Students will take the Unit 10 test on Monday. On Tuesday, we will start our last unit in Everyday Math. This unit focuses on probability and end-of-year review. We will also try to collect data from the school community and graph this information using Open Office software.
Reading-This week students will read Oral History, a story that teaches students about how cultures and families use storytelling to preserve their heritage.
Students will also read their A-Z books and books of their choosing during their free time.
Book Club-Every Friday the students and I participate in a literature circle. We are currently reading Howliday Inn by James Howe, author of Bunnicula.
Writing-Students will learn about the elements of a story through a interactive site about Cinderella. On Tuesday, students will begin writing a fantasy story. They will have many free-write opportunities the rest of the year.
Other important information
Guest speaker this Thursday-Trey Oursler. Mr. Oursler will talk about his career as an optometrist as part of our Careers and Economics unit.
