Janice's Corner
As an authorized International Baccalaureate World School, Hickory Day School recognizes assessment as a key component of learning and teaching. Each quarter the formal assessment reporting is accomplished through the use of a specially designed report card and varied conferencing arrangements.
In response to your reflections on last year's conferencing, the staff re-examined recent practices and focused on re-organizing the structure and scheduling of conferences. This attempt to increase the efficiency of communicating student progress information resulted in an array of conferencing scenarios appropriate to each grade level. The staff of each educational suite worked collaboratively to design a conferencing format beneficial to students and parents at that particular stage of development. We have recently completed all first-quarter assessment conferences and are very pleased to announce that more than 95% of our families participated in conferences scheduled at various times throughout the school day. Reflections and comments made have been very positive. This is an incredibly significant increase in conference participation from the past years and every member of the Hickory Day School community will benefit from these opportunities to share information promoting student learning.
As always, parents are encouraged to contact the teachers and arrange for a conference at any time throughout the year. Our staff welcomes the opportunity to schedule a requested conference and they will meet with you at the earliest convenient opportunity.

Written In Bone
Grades 5-9 had a very successful and educational trip to Washington, DC to study at the Written In Bone exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum. They also visited the brand new Martin Luther King Memorial. Thank you to all the teachers and staff that arranged such a wonderful experience for the students.

HAVE YOU DONATED YOUR DOZEN?
As a non-sectarian, independent school, Hickory Day School receives no funding from local, state or federal tax revenue. Tuition income only covers a portion of the cost of a child's HDS experience. To meet the remaining funding needed to provide an amazing International Baccalaureate world school education, we depend on fundraising and philanthropic gifts received annually.
The success of the Annual Fund depends on the participation of all who appreciate the value of the school community. As the only local International Baccalaureate PYP school, HDS is not only beneficial to the students but also is a cornerstone of educational excellence in the Greater Hickory area.
The Annual Fund drive this year is focused around the number 12...it is our 2012 campaign, and there are dozens of ways to meet our financial goals. All gifts are needed and appreciated, and no gift is too small.
Please pick up a donation envelope from the office, email your pledge to Jennifer Oursler at oursler@embarqmail.com, or simply hit this button to make a donation through PayPal or a major credit card.

Grandparents' Day
Grandparents' Day was held on October 14, and a good time was had by all. Grandparents' Day is our opportunity to share what we are learning, reflect on our heritage and show any extended family member all about HDS.

Car Pool Craziness!
Car Pool continues to be one of the greatest challenges faced by the HDS staff on a daily basis. We have many little people all leaving school at the same time, and the parking lot can be a very dangerous place for a little person.
PLEASE be sure to adhere by the following rules:
- DO NOT get out of your car to talk to anyone. If you need to talk to your child's teacher or another parent, please park and walk onto the pavilion.
- DO NOT go around the car in front of you. Small children may be crossing in front of that car.
- If your child needs extra time getting into the car, or is not ready and waiting to be escorted to your car, please pull into a parking space and walk over to get your child.
- PLEASE tell anyone who is picking up your child, grandparents, baby-sitter etc. the car pool rules.
If everyone follows the rules and the line moves smoothly and effectively, dismissal will be a safer time for everyone.
And...
As an additional reminder, please be sure to sign your child in or out at any time your child is coming or going outside of normal arrival or dismissal times. It is critical that the front office knows which children are in attendance at the school at any time.
