THE ULTIMATE GOAL
SAVE THE SCHOOL AT LEAST $7,000 IN EXPENSES WHILE MAKING OUR CAMPUS MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
Last spring, our fifth and sixth graders showed us how much we could accomplish by working together to save energy and protect the environment. With these creative thinkers, problem solvers, and responsible global citizens to lead us, Hickory Day School has "gone green" this year!
Eighth grader, Stephanie Bertrand, has coordinated the following objectives and activities to aid in reducing our school-wide carbon footprint. She has a wonderful understanding of what being a responsible global citizen means and is working with members of the community to make our school more eco-friendly. Check out what we've done so far!
Saving Energy:
  • Flip the switch -- Turn off all lights when not needed; turn off computers before leaving at the end of the day. Reminders are posted on all doors and in all rooms.
  • No-Power Hour -- Shut off all power from 12:30 - 1:30 every Friday afternoon.
The graphs above display our school’s overall savings in both kilowatt hours and in our monthly expenses. To date, we have used 30,104 less kilowatt hours than we had at this same point last year. Because of this we have saved a total of $2,336.36 thus far on our electricity bills. Remember, our goal for the year is $7,000 in savings. Thank you all for making this a possibility!
Saving Water:
  • Catch every drop -- save water by catching cold water while you are waiting for it to warm up so you can wash your hands. Use the drops you save to water the plants.
Reducing. Reusing. Recycling:
  • Begin bringing a no-waste lunch.
  • Check out Mrs. Farr's catalog of reusables and choose your favorites.
  • Pack lunches in reusables and put them in the fridge every night. Grab them and go every morning.
  • Eat a nutritious lunch. Stop by the POD to feed the worms the leftovers -- if there are any -- and put the reusables back in the lunchbox for the trip home.
  • Put all information on line! Announcements, permission slips, new calendar items, and any other "need to know" items will be posted EVERY WEEK on the new Hickory Day School website. No more searching in book bags for your school news. It will be only a click away.
  • Parents' Association, marketing committee, and event planners will announce meetings and information on the Weekly News page of the website.
