Congratulations to Jillian our new Student Government President. Both students ran a successful and ethical campaign. We will try to post speeches to the website this week. We experienced tremendous action from this planner. A class government simulation blossomed into a new student government for Hickory Day School. Students are already changing their world one small step at a time. What a great way for students to show us what they have learned! We will complete our summative project for “How We Organize Ourselves” this week. It is due on Friday. The title of the current planner is Vote for Me! Next week we will begin our new planner “Sharing the Planet” by dividing into 4 lab groups.

Summative Project Authentic Assessment:

Your Role-

As a consultant, you have been asked to design the structure the government on the newly operational Planet Earth 2 or a newly discovered island. Both are sovereign nations with native populations that do not speak English. Very little is know about the indigenous population. We are eager to populate the new land with new citizens. Create a PowerPoint presentation outlining your vision as a “Founding Father”. You must include a name for the country (1) the type and primary function of this government (2) Structure- define the structure using a flowchart (who is in power, who does what, and what is needed to organize the people) , Explain why you advocate this structure (beliefs, perspective, rights, character, responsibility, learner profile), and provide the framework for the essential documents (constitution?) (3) the role of civic participation (does it exist?, who qualifies, are there elections? Elections? Appointments?) (5) your perspective on the use and misuse of power using historical references (education, welfare, healthcare, social security, protection of the people and environment; laws, military, police, native peoples, alliances, war, trade, property, taxes ) Will you use your power as the Head of Government/ Head of State for the common good of the people? Why or Why not?
