For the week of: May 14 - 18Paragraph describing overview of week. ON FRIDAY OF THIS WEEK, MAY 18, I will be taking all of my math students to a math competition at CVCC. The students have worked a practice test for their assignment this week (it also serves as a good exam review). Jake Beerli was a third place winner last year - hopefully we will have another winner this year, but the contest will serve as a problem solving enrichment exercise for everyone and give them a chance to mingle with math students accross the area. PreAlgebra: Because there is some probability on the CVCC PreAlgebra test, we will be doing the second half of Chapter 11 first. We will review simple probability and odds, and introduce Permutations and Combinations. There will not be any quizzes this week. Algebra 1: We will begin Chapter 12 this week with a discussion of the square root function and a review of simplifying radicals. The students will also begin an EOC review packet. There will be 10 problems per night in addition to the regular homework. I will try to give as much class time as possible for students to begin homework. I will also be assigning the bare minimum of problems for homework, and giving extra practice as extra credit. There will not be any quizzes this week. Geometry: We will be finishing the chapter on solids this week with a quiz on Monday and a test on Tuesday. The students are prepared for the quizzes, IF THEY REMEMBER THEIR FORMULAS! After the test, we will begin our last chapter, covering vectors, matrices, and transformations using vectors and matrices. We will also begin some benchmark reviews for the exam at the end of the week. Humanities: The students will be bringing home the Constitution test for your signature on Monday. I will continue to work on objective test taking skills - especially Process of Elimination. Please reinforce this concept with your student as you go over this test with them. Especially on the first page, the questions were pretty easy even if you did not actually know all the answers. I hinted at this before the test, but some students are still having difficulty. They will be awarded 5 extra points if they return the test with parental signature on Tuesday. We will continue our study of the Bill of Rights this week. We will also continue to discuss our rights as outlined in the Bill of Rights as they pertain to post 9/11 legislation. There will be no tests or quizzes this week.
