Pretests have been given to determine an appropriate level for your child. We will be reviewing the process of Wordly Wise by completing a generic “trial” lesson all together. Individual Wordly Wise packets will begin the following week. All activities are expected to be completed in class. Tests will be taken on Fridays. In addition to completing the activities, students are required to type and printout a spreadsheet of their words to be kept in their writing folders. It is our goal to avoid mere memorization of the words for the test, but to encourage their USE in writing throughout the year. |
Short, grammar related activities from the Daily Language Review will make up most of the homework. These short (15 minute) activities review grammar, usage, spelling, and word meaning topics. They are used to review skills as well as develop time management and organizational skills. They will be given out on Monday, due on Friday. |
We will spend Monday’s completing an editing activity. Those that can accurately complete the activity will be moved on to an individual writing activity that is related to the Area of Inquiry. They can work on the writing activity, or Wordly Wise from Tuesday through Thursday. I will be conferencing with them and checking on their progress throughout the week. Direct instruction will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday for those who need it. I will stop the instruction in time to allow for 15 minutes of Wordly Wise to be completed each day. I am excited that this schedule will allow me to differentiate, motivate, and encourage all our learners to be where they comfortably fit. It is a workable schedule that will hopefully encourage the students to use their time in class wisely and “Be all they can be!” ….like the Army! (but a bit nicer! J ) |
I am in the process of preparing goals with each student. Last week we outlined our strengths, weaknesses, as well as some areas we would like to grow to. Have an honest discussion with your child as to what he/she truly needs to work on. “Sugar coating” problem areas does nothing to solve problems. I look forward to working with each student to show how they are capable of obtaining their goals. However, I will also be there to constantly reinforce that it takes commitment, hard work, and a level of dedication to achieve goals. They just don’t happen. If you have a goal or concern that you would like me to monitor throughout the year, please let me know. |
