Hickory Day
Primary Years Programme

The Primary Years Programme has been developed to identify six areas of knowledge, which are the organizing structure for our school's curriculum. These themes are all inquiry led. They are as follows:

Who are we?
Where are we in place and time?
How do we express ourselves?
How does the world work?
How do we organize ourselves?
How do we share the planet?

Our PYP is committed to structured, purposeful inquiry, which engages students actively in their own learning.

What will my child be learning?

Your child will:
- develop a deep understanding of important concepts, the aim is for depth and quality rather than quantity.
- conduct research into knowledge which has local and global significance.
- acquire and practice a range of essential skills.
- be encouraged to develop positive attitudes towards learning, the environment, and other people.
- have the opportunity for involvement in responsible action and social service.

The Student Profile

An IB PYP school strives toward developing an international person. What is an international person? We believe it is a person who displays the following attributes and dispositions:

INQUIRERS
THINKERS
COMMUNICATORS
RISK-TAKERS
KNOWLEDGEABLE
PRINCIPLED
CARING
OPEN-MINDED
WELL-BALANCED
REFLECTIVE

These attributes are taught explicitly and implicitly throughout everything we do. Students are asked to reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses and to work on making themselves an international person.

The Student Attitudes

As an IB PYP school, we feel it is vital to focus on the development of positive attitudes towards people, the environment, and learning. Those attitudes are also addressed throughout everything we do at school. Activities are designed which promote positive attitudes of:

APPRECIATION
COMMITMENT
CONFIDENCE
COOPERATION
CREATIVITY
CURIOSITY
EMPATHY
ENTHUSIASM
INDEPENDENCE
INTEGRITY
RESPECT
TOLERANCE
